He thought he had been hit with a firework or a stone. But it wasn't true. Darco Sangermano, a 28-year-old guy from Turin, actually had a bullet plunged in a nostril. He was led immediately to the “Loreto Mare” hospital, where a real miracle saved him. As a matter of fact, the boy sneezed and the bullet was miraculously ejected from his nose.
Among all the tragic events that every year occur in Naples during New Year's eve, this incredible story made me believe miracles do really exist. I don't know why, but in Naples gunshots are used to celebrate the coming of the new year. And the first daily news of 2011 made no exception, listing all the victims that were injured or died the day before because of a bullet shot by the crowd. But this time a different news appeared among the others.
Sangermano was parting with his friends in a house in Naples. Just after midnight, he went out for a walk with his girlfriend in the alleys around Borsa square. Suddenly, the girl noticed that his boyfriend had been hit near the eye and decided to call the emergency number. “I believe I was hit by something like a petard, or a little stone” said the boy to the doctors.
However, in the nose there was something more dangerous. The surgeons explained that the bullet had to be removed immediately, but it wasn't necessary. While waiting outside the operating room, Darco sneezed and, under the unbelieving eyes of his girlfriend, the bullet leapt out of his nose. The specialists checked the boy and, as he seemed in perfect health conditions, they let him leave the hospital.
A specialist working in the hospital in Turin where the boy have been admitted explains: “The bullet broke the bone surrounding the left eye and the splinters hit the hidden part. We must remove this pieces, but the retina won't suffer any damage from the accident”. Here I leave you with this question: is it just chance or do miracles really exist?
